RE-imagine Paper- September 2018

Hello to all our wonderful colleagues in the world of paper! We hope your August break has been restful and that you are now ready for action. It has been an exciting month for us

Things We’re Celebrating!

A recent article published by Accounting and Business Magazine highlighted both the leading role being played by African countries banning plastic and also the positive impact this can have on the local economy. In Kenya where single-use plastic was banned recently there has been an upsurge in local businesses taking advantage of the opportunity to replace plastic with paper-based items. Plastic bans can help the environment and businesses too!

 News and Events

The Paper Plus team were fortunate to attend an event run by Future Planet: Living Sustainably, Adventures in Zero Waste. An engaging event with a range of inspiring speakers discussing issues from working on a zero waste lifestyle to promotion of the
circular economy.
The theme for September has really been Zero Waste.  The first week saw the launch of the 11th annual #zerowaste week:  an international campaign which provides inspiration, and practical advice on reducing waste.
To find out about the campaign in your country go to: https://www.zerowasteweek.co.uk/

What we learnt this month

  • Up to 60% of the rubbish that ends up in the dustbin could be recycled.
  • The unreleased energy contained in the average dustbin each year could power a television for 5,000 hours.
  • The largest lake in Britain could be filled with rubbish from the UK in 8 months.
  • On average, 16% of the money you spend on a product pays for the packaging, which ultimately ends up as rubbish.
  • As much as 50% of waste in the average dustbin could be composted.
  • Up to 80% of a vehicle can be recycled.
  • 9 out of 10 people would recycle more if it were made easier
